About this year’s recipients

Emily Cantie was a member of the varsity swimming team for six years (grades 7-12), and earned a letter each season. During 11th grade she received the Coach’s Cup Award for her performance in the pool, and for her dedication and leadership to the team. In the same year Emily was presented with the Harvard Book award, and also was one of only 30 area students selected for the Connections Health Careers Program.

Daniel Maher played basketball for his four years at St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute. He also played volleyball for three years and baseball as a freshman. During his athletic career with the Marauders, Daniel was named the most improved player in both basketball and volleyball. He received the Coach’s Award for basketball during his freshman season, and he was the 411 Basketball All-Star Game MVP. In the classroom, Daniel earned a cumulative grade point average of 100. He earned first honors during every quarter of high school, and was the Valedictorian for St. Joe’s class of 2013.

About the New Era Student-Athlete Scholarship

The New Era Student-Athlete Scholarship was created in 2012 to recognize deserving high school student-athletes who excel not only in their respective athletic endeavor(s) but in the classroom as well. In addition, New Era wants you to Fly Your Own Flag, to express yourself and your individuality, how you promote your individuality, how you “write your own history” or “blaze your own trail,” and “dance your own dance.” Finally, the new Era Student-Athlete Scholarship seeks individuals who take part in extra-curricular activities including but not limited to community outreach, student government, theatre, clubs / groups, organizations, etc.

About the Award

Through the generous support of New Era, a $2,500 grant will be awarded annually to a deserving male and female high school student-athlete.

Scholarship Criteria / Candidates Must:

  • Be a graduating senior in the year of the application;
  • Be admitted to an accredited college or university of their choice (check will be officially awarded after proper notification of enrollment is received through the college / university);
  • Reside in the greater Western New York region;
  • Develop an essay in which the applicant, offers insight into his / her self-expression, creativity and individuality through activities, hobbies, interest, etc. In essence, tell us what makes you, your lifestyle and your passions unique? Remember, Fly Your Own Flag!
  • Complete the attached application, including submission of at least three letters of recommendation
